Volunteer to help prevent torture and ill treatment in the UK
Across the UK, more than 2,500 dedicated volunteers carry out preventive monitoring visits in detention settings, reporting on the conditions and treatment of people deprived of their liberty. In addition to preventing torture and ill treatment, reports from these visits create a picture of each establishment over time, informing national and international understanding of issues and trends.
Volunteers are essential to the prevention of torture and ill treatment, and have made a significant difference for people deprived of their liberty, including by highlighting inconsistent or problematic practices, raising awareness of human rights among detained people and facility staff, and giving people deprived of their liberty a voice in their treatment.
If you’re looking for a meaningful way to contribute to a fairer society, consider signing up to volunteer as an independent monitor. Wherever you are in the UK, and whatever your background, there are opportunities to volunteer to help prevent ill treatment in places where people are deprived of their liberty. Apply today to help drive positive change.
